Classiques! at Esplanade will see Resident Conductor Adrian Chiang leading the Philharmonic Youth Winds through a programme of wind literature encompassing vigour, energy and passion.

Philharmonic Youth Winds will be performing Samuel L. Hazo’s Ride, an “exhilaratingly fun piece for any band to play”, as well as David Gillingham’s critically acclaimed Concerto for Horn and Symphonic Band featuring horn player Lewis Poh from The Philharmonic Winds and Singapore Armed Forces Central Band.

Singapore Symphony Orchestra cellist Chan Wei Shing takes to the stage in Johan de Meij’s Casanova for Cello and Wind Orchestra, for which the Dutch composer received a First Prize at the International Composition Competition of Corciano, Italy in 1999.

Also on the lineup is Equus, an excellent demonstration of “dynamic minimalism” and a “virtuosic show piece for winds”, by renowned composer Eric Whitacre, guest conducted by Tay Kai Tze of The Philharmonic Winds.

In commemoration of Gustav Mahler’s 150th birth anniversary, the concert will end with the Finale from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D major, arranged for wind orchestra by Hardy Mertens.

Over the last few years Chong Boon has transformed into a vibrant and confident learning institution with significant achievements, only because we enjoyed the support and service of the very committed and resourceful Alumni

As I will be moving on to Yuan Ching with effect from 15th Dec, I wish to place on record my gratitude to each and everyone of you for your generosity and kindness throughout my stay with Chong Boon.

I know you will continue with your good work and work closely with the new Principal Mr Yeo Kuerk Heng to bring Chong Boon to a higher level.

Sorry to have cancelled today's rehearsal. Reason being, I won't be there as I'm away for masterclass and there isn't any one to conduct. Secondly, If the attendance is always like that, we're wasting the school's resources (IE: Power and manpower).

Write up of the band:
Chong Boon Alumni Winds, the alumni band of Chong Boon Secondary School comprises of graduates from Chong Boon Concert Band. Although they have graduated, the alumni would return to Chong Boon Concert Band whenever time permits, to help their juniors improve and prepare for major concerts and competitions such as the bi-annual SYF. It was not long when the idea to form an alumni band, struck some of the alumni.

Putting thoughts in action, they banded together to gather the different batches of members who have the same passion for music. After much effort and with the support of the teachers and current band members, the Chong Boon Alumni Winds was finally formed in January this year with the strength of 20 members, consisting of members from the different batches all the way back to the year 2000.

Even with busy schedules such as work commitment, studies and national service, the alumni members committed themselves to the weekly or even bi-weekly practices. The Chong Boon Alumni Winds aim to bring all our alumni members together, and to let the juniors from Chong Boon Symphonic Band (previously known as Chong Boon Concert Band) to keep in touch with the alumni, and to know the upcoming plans and activites we have.

Hi fellow alumni, for those who haven't receive the minutes of meeting via email, pls kindly inform me. I'll forward it to you again. And ya, like what I've mentioned in the latest mail regarding the photocopying. I think it's reasonable to collect band fund for photocopying and some other expenses.

Due to some copyright issue, we cannot photocopy the scores in school. Anyway, the scores doesn't even belong to CBSS. We'll source for the cheapest printing centre and get it printed asap.

PLS DON'T ASK ME WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GETTING THE SCORES! When practice commences, we'll then give you the scores on that day itself! Thanks.

hey fellow alumni! yea, i've just talked to Mrs Ng this afternoon at cbss. She told me that we can only start practice on the first saturday next year, which is 9 Jan 2010.
WHY SO LONG???!! hahahas. yea, cos the current batch of sec 4s will be mugging like hell for their O levels. I intended to have practice after Os, but Mrs Ng will be in overseas. And she'll be back on the last week of december. But I bet no one will want to attend rehearsal one day after christmas. So, she suggested on the first saturday of 2010.
Regarding the conductor, hmmmm... I bet many would want Mr Leng to conduct, and some wants Mr Chiang. Well, like what I've told you guys, we'll VOTE! hahahs!
When's the voting? hmmmm.. we'll hold a meeting soon to decide. When can you guys make it??!! Or should I fix it? I'll update you guys again~!

Hi fellow alumni!!! Ya, I've just contacted Mrs Ng and asked her regarding the practice venue for us. She said that she'll have to talk to Mdm Tay, the current vice-principal of cbss. If she agrees, then it'll be good for us! wohooo!!!

And I've asked Mrs Ng whether is there any theme for this concert. She said, ya, multi-racial is it?! nah, i couldn't remember. wahahas! She said that the main band will be playing alvamar overture (James Barnes), Legend from Yao (arr. by Darence Leng) and some malay folk song lah. Then I asked how about us?! She actually suggest us to play Korean Folk Song Suite. I'm not very sure if I got the title right! wahahahs! ya, she wants us to play this piece.

I heard from Mr Adrian Chiang that the concert, Metier 8 will be held at Victoria Concert Hall next year either April or June. well, shall see then.

Now, we need to confirm our musicians and then chair a meeting to discuss some matters like who's the conductor, what pieces and when's practice starting.

Hi fellow cbwinds alumni, we would like to set up our very own chong boon alumni winds!

Next year, there'll be a concert, METIER 8. And Mr Chiang (the current resident conductor of cbwinds) was suggesting that this concert will be presented by the main band (cbwinds) and the alumni winds. Will then end the concert with a combine piece.

We strongly urge you people to join us and make music together!! hee.. Once we confirm the members, we'll then hold a meeting to decide who's the conductor and the repertoire.
